Short CV:

Dr. Nikolaos Papandrianos is an Associate Professor in the Department of Energy Systems at the University of Thessaly, following his transfer from the former Department of Nursing of the General Department of Lamia of the same University. He was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Nursing of the former Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of Central Greece in Lamia on January 10, 2018.

He graduated from the School of Medicine of the University of Patras in 2000 and completed his PhD in Nuclear Medicine at the same University in 2011. He completed his medical specialization in Nuclear Medicine at the University Hospital of Patras (2005–2009). Subsequently, he worked as an Adjunct Physician at the Department of Nuclear Medicine of the University Hospital of Larisa (2010–2011), while from March 2011 to September 2020 he served as Scientific Director of the Nuclear Medicine Laboratory at “Diagnostiki Iatriki S.A.”, Larisa.

His teaching experience in undergraduate and postgraduate study programs spans a total of 10 years. During the last four academic years (from the Winter Semester of the academic year 2022–2023 to the Spring Semester of the academic year 2025–2026), he taught in seven different postgraduate programs at the University of Thessaly and the University of Patras, covering a broad spectrum of his scientific expertise.

His research interests include Nuclear Medicine, imaging techniques using ionizing radiation in SPECT and SPECT/CT, diagnostic models in Nuclear Medicine and Cardiology using machine learning and deep learning techniques, Nuclear Oncology, medical imaging systems, and decision-support applications with emphasis on image-based diagnosis in Nuclear Medicine.

He is currently the principal supervisor of two PhD dissertations, one of which was successfully completed on April 23, 2026, while the second is expected to be completed in September 2026. He is also a member of the Research Laboratory of Water Resources and Energy Management, Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Machinery of the Department of Energy Systems, directed by Professor Spyridon Kotsopoulos.

Dr. Papandrianos has authored 93 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, international and national conference proceedings, and collective scientific volumes in the fields of Nuclear Medicine, ionizing radiation, diagnostic models in Nuclear Medicine through machine learning applications, and medical decision-support systems, with 47 of these publications produced during the last five years. More specifically, he has published 41 papers in international scientific journals with Impact Factor, 49 papers in national and international conferences, edited the chapter “Radiotherapy: Basic Principles of Treatment” in the book Oncology Nursing (1st and 2nd editions, 2020 and 2025, respectively), and authored two chapters in international scientific books related to his field of expertise.

His research work has received significant recognition from the scientific community, with a total of 1,515 citations and an h-index of 21 according to Google Scholar (May 23, 2026). Of these, 1,193 citations and an h-index of 20 correspond to the last five years.

In addition, he serves as Guest Editor of the Special Session “Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Diagnosis and Prognosis” in the journal Bioengineering and acts as reviewer for a significant number of internationally recognized scientific journals in his field.

Furthermore, he has participated in five research projects, including two national projects funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI) and the Research Excellence Partnerships program, as well as three European projects under Erasmus+ KA2, Horizon 2020, and SNS Europe. In particular, the EMERALD project (Explainable Cognitive Artificial Intelligence Models for Diagnosis in Nuclear Medicine), in which he was a core member of the research team and contributor to the proposal writing process, was ranked 6th nationally in the Life Sciences–Health sector in 2021 and funded by HFRI. The project later received the Silver Award for “Best Machine Learning Solution” at the AI & Data Awards 2025, powered by UBITECH, in February 2025.
